International adoption (also referred to as intercountry adoption or transnational adoption) is a type of adoption in which an individual or couple becomes the legal and permanent parents of a child that is a national of a different country. In general, prospective adoptive parents must meet the legal adoption requirements of their country of residence and those of the country whose nationality the child holds. International Adoption is not the same thing as Transcultural or Interracial adoption. The laws of different countries vary in their willingness to allow international adoptions. Some countries, such as China and Korea, have relatively well-established rules and procedures for international adoptions, while other countries expressly forbid it. Some countries, notably many African nations, have extended residency requirements for adoptive parents that in effect rule out most international adoptions. Malawi, for instance, requires residency except in special cases. From Wikipedia under the

In 1993, 7348 foreign-born children were adopted in the United States. Overall, Korea was the greatest source for intercountry adoptions, followed in descending order by Russia, Guatemala, Colombia, Paraguay, the Philippines, India, China, Ukraine, Peru, Honduras, Brazil, Bolivia, Bulgaria, Vietnam, and El Salvador. Intercountry adoption may be a more viable choice than domestic adoption for many families, especially those who want to adopt a healthy infant. However, the process can be complex and expensive. Like domestic adoptions, costs and waiting time can vary significantly. Costs can range from a low of $8,0 [cont.] Answered by kittykatluvr4 - Mon Aug 21 14:06:55 2006 What are the pros and cons of smaller vs larger international adoption agencies?
Q. Is it better to go with a smaller agency that only works with one or two countries, or with a larger agency that has programs in multiple countries? Asked by Rah2006 - Tue Jun 29 16:02:25 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I think it is definitely better to go with a larger agency. For one, if they work with several countries, you have more options if the country you are working with falls through. Countries close quite often in the adoption world, or their regulations change and you are no longer able to adopt from there. If you are with an agency the works in many countries, if this happens, then it is easier to move to another country. If you have to switch agencies, you will most likely be out a lot of money. Also, the bigger they are, the more experienced they are. Adoption is one thing you don't want to go through with someone who is always guessing their way through. I so wish we had gone with Holt. I never hear anything but good about them. … [cont.] Answered by Jennifer - Tue Jun 29 22:14:35 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "international adoption" |
